a note from Heather

To all of my friends, followers, clients, and supporters - I wanted to let you all know that I have decided to step away from Design Roots. There are so many emotions I’m feeling as I type this letter, but I know this is exactly what I need to do in this season of life. God has been very clear over the past six months that I need to SLOW DOWN and reprioritize things a bit. And with that, it was time to take a step back from Design Roots and focus 100% on my family. Heck, we even moved out to an acre in the trees! (Again, not our intention 6 months ago but if you follow God’s lead, he shows you were you need to be.) Our kids are my number one priority and I only have one shot to be there for them at this stage. This decision does not come lightly and there has been much thought, prayer, and conversation around it. Design Roots has been a big piece of me for 11 years now and will always be a part of my heart and spirit. I am proud of what I have built and accomplished over the years and I am grateful for all of the people I’ve met along the way! So THANK YOU for following along in this journey. You are in good hands with the team here and I’m excited to see what Design Roots does in the years to come!

But for now… it’s time to pass the torch.

For those who would like to keep in touch, I would love to hear from you! You can email me at hbbloem@mac.com and/or follow me on Instagram @heatherbloem.

xoxo,
heather

Q & A

Wait, you’re not Design Roots anymore?
Yes, I know. This decision was tough, but I strongly feel this chapter needs to be closed. When I came up with this name years ago - I choose it in case I ever wanted to get back in the landscape, outdoor living world. Now that it’s there, it needs to stay there. It’s where it needs to be.

But are you still doing house sketches?
YES! I have so enjoyed sketching those for people over the years, and I will continue to offer that service. (hello, it’s something I can do from home while being under the same roof as my kiddos) ;) If interested, just email me hbbloem@mac.com

What do you plan on doing with ALL that energy you’ve spent running a business?

Well, I’ve had a little test run over the past few months as I took time away to make sure this was the right decision. Then covid happened, and well, this sure is a weird season we’re all in amiright? The past few months has found me focused on my kids, homeschooling like everyone else, and slowly unpacking our new house. We have lots of plans to re-do the landscape here ourselves, and I’ve already been painting patterns on our walls. My time will be spent “feathering my nest” so to speak.

Easter tablescapes!

Easter may look a little different this year, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t still make the most of our time spent together on this joyous holiday! We encourage you to still follow traditions that you can, put on your Sunday best, and decorate that Easter table (even if no one sees it but you). Plus, creating the same atmosphere will lift moods and help put you in that holiday spirit. To spur a little excitement and creativity, we have collected some beautiful inspiration for your own table. Happy Easter!

baby, it's cold outside

We are all about life outdoors… except when the weather is cold, dreary, and rainy all week! (or month around this time of year) Luckily it doesn’t last that long here in the south! But to keep us happy until spring blooms start popping up, we bring the outdoors in. For starters, bring any outdoor plants that don’t survive freezing temperatures (i.e. succulents, lemon tree, etc) and place them inside your home in a sunny spot. We also like to add plants inside for that greenery all year round. Now, I can hear some of you saying “but I don’t have a green thumb and can’t keep anything alive”. Fake plants work well too! Throw in some natural textures, and you’ll be surprised how the feeling of outdoors inside your home brings a smile to your face. Here are a few of our favorite ways to bring the outdoors in!

a design roots valentine's day

With Valentine’s day coming right around the corner, we know how hard it can be to come up with different gifts for those you love. We have curated some items that would be so fun for decorating your home or giving as gifts for others (or yourself) that all relate to our love of plants and the outdoors.

First up, we have some gorgeous faux plants on the list because we GET the struggle of keeping plants alive. The fake ones can be just as beautiful and way less of a headache. The beautiful eucalyptus can be used in vases galore to add a little green to your space. A faux flower bouquet in a planter create a splash of color to your heart and your home.

Let’s talk about this Glossier lip balm. This stuff is THE stuff. Here at Design Roots, we swear by it, and wouldn’t be caught dead without it! The best part - it’s only $12!!

Valentine’s Day is known for being a flower gifting holiday. That’s why we’ve found some options for a beautiful vase to put them in or the perfect container for succulents! How many times have you either been given flowers or bought some for yourself (no shame), and then not had the right vase for them, so you stuck them in a mason jar? Guilty as charged. These options will be the gift that keeps on giving for Valentine’s days to come.

Another gift that everyone can enjoy - the gift of a beautifully scented home. This diffuser uses dried flowers to add to the beauty of a good smell. There is nothing better than this combo (in our very unbiased, plant-loving opinion).

What will you be wearing this Valentine’s day and throughout the month of February? There is something about this month that screams pink. We found this super cute, and really soft sweater that is the perfect pink and perfect thickness for this time of the year. To go with the pink sweater, hearts always seem like the right idea. These earrings are the perfect amount of festive and subtle all in one.

Lastly, there’s the hint of spring and fresh colors and blooming plants and flowers in the air. And with a new season, comes the need for new decor for your front door! This wreath will provide the elegance of the high class person you are, as well as the fresh color and fun that is perfect for the season.

what we're loving: jan 2020

As most of you already know, the Pantone color of the year is classic blue. That, for us, was music to our ears. If you’ve been following us for a while, or if you’ve ever been into our showroom, you know that we love blue. We’re not the only ones either! Our client’s number one requested color for their space is blue. Why is that? Well, we’re so glad you asked. Blue has historically been a color that represents tranquility, calmness, relaxation, and has even shown to be a color that, when looked at, helps put one at ease. It only makes sense, that our clients want that relaxing feeling when they step into their backyard or outdoor space. That all being said, we carry a lot of blue in our showroom because it’s popular with most clients, and it happens to be one of our favorite colors too.

As we’ve been scrolling this month, we’ve stumbled across some other blue things that we have loved seeing and thought y’all might like them too. Take a look at our top 9 for what we’re loving this month!

(Each link will take you to where you can purchase each product or take a closer look, and there are some things that are available right here in our showroom!)

Pouf, planters, and some pillows are only available in our showroom!

outdoor living space essentials

Winter may be underway, but Spring will be upon us before we can imagine. With the spring weather, comes more time spent outdoors. In order to be fully ready when the temperatures rise, you’ll want to make sure to check off this list of all the essentials to maximize your time outdoors!

shade - when the sun is shining bright, you’ll need to find a way to escape from it. One of our favorites for this is shade maker umbrellas. Made from high performance fabrics, these umbrellas not only provide reprieve from the sun, but can withstand the outdoor elements.

plants - you’re outside, so it’s only natural! (no pun intended) Plus, plants provide texture and color that softens any space. Succulents top our list for our go-to plant selection. They are simple to care for, work in just about any space, and are easy to decorate table tops/bar tops/mantles/etc. We also love to plant a small tree in an oversize planter for an immediate space changer. This provides height, shade, and can help soften brick walls.

pillows - add a pop of color and comfort to your space. Pillows are hands down the easiest way to add personality to your space. You can play with color, add patterns, or swap out seasonally. We recommend sunbrella or outdoor fabrics if your pillows are in the elements. If you have a space that’s well covered, we aren’t so strict with the outdoor fabric rule. (hello, scotchguard!) We have tons in our showroom and if you’re looking for something specific, we’d love to help you find it.

seating - a place to relax, whether it be a couch, lounge chairs or hammock. This is one of the most important aspects to an outdoor space. Whether relaxing by yourself or entertaining with friends, you want a comfortable seat!

place to eat - table and chairs. It’s no surprise that we love dining al fresco - there’s something very special about being outside to enjoy a meal. If you don’t have room for a full dining table, then opt for a smaller cafe table and chairs. An oversized coffee table or a cluster of a few smaller stools can work to accommodate a few plates, your cheese board, and drinks.

We hope that this helps you prepare your space for more time outdoors this year!

we've been scouted

It is so exciting for us to announce that we are in this years issue of the Plano/Frisco Scout Guide! The Scout Guide, for those that don’t know, is a beautiful resource to over 60 cities across the country. It provides independently owned companies an opportunity to be surrounded by a community of other companies just like themselves. Basically, they take a certain region or specific cities, and they scout out all of the wonderful local, independent businesses and compile them into a beautifully designed book. These books are then passed out to people around town so that they can have the opportunity to hear about companies that they might not know of.

The design team for The Scout Guide did a wonderful job curating an ad specific to us, our taste, and our business. We are filled with joy that they decided we should be back in the guide this year, and couldn’t wait to share it with you!

dining al fresco

Dining al fresco - to eat outside, in the open air.

Obviously we love to dine outside, and it is our goal to create pretty spaces for clients to be able to enjoy the same. From the perfect dining table, the right seating, grill options and table accessories - we’ve got you covered! Here are our top items needed for outdoor dining:

The Grill
If you are going to enjoy your meal outside, why not cook outside too? Outdoor kitchens have become the new norm, where you can prepare your food and be in the company of others. There’s nothing quite like the taste of your food fresh off of the grill!

The Table & Seating
Finding the right table for your space is crucial. When I start working with clients, I first like to find out how they entertain. How many people to you typically have over at a time? Do you prefer to be seated around a formal table? Or do you host more causal affairs? Finding these answers helps us determine the right table for you. From teak to metal to concrete - the options are endless.

Again with seating, I like to ask clients what takes priority for them. Do you typically linger around the table? Is comfort more important? Seating is a place where you can have fun by adding in color, texture, and style. It doesn’t necessarily have to match - there’s no rule that the chairs have to match the table - have fun with it and add your own style! A bench is great for families that hosts a lot of kids or a lot of people in a smaller space. They takes up less square footage, but provide a place for more people to fit in a tighter space.

The Accessories
From plates to drink-ware to candles and lanterns - the accessories available for the outdoors are endless. Plates and serving ware have come a long way, and there are many options durable for the outdoors but looks fancy enough for inside. One of our favorite lines is made from malaboo - combination of melamine and bamboo, and the outcome is beautiful! We have tons of melamine plates to choose from in our showroom, as well as lanterns, candles, and candles that can float in the pool! Also look into getting some cafe lights because they add a layer of ambiance and a finishing touch to any outdoor space.

We hope that over these upcoming holidays that you enjoy the time spent gathering with friends and loved ones inside and out.

Cheers!

shades of blue

IMG_0917.jpg

The color of the year for 2020 is blue, and for good reason. Blue is the color of the sky and water, and easily found in nature everywhere. The color symbolizes loyalty, strength, and wisdom, and is known to have a calming effect on the psyche. No wonder this is the most requested color by our clients! Blue mixes easily with other colors of nature, making it an easy and beautiful choice for your outdoor space. Blue can be used with any style of space from modern to traditional and everything in between. Bold and bright or soft and subtle, there are a million ways to add some blue into your space. See some of our favorite applications here:

Add pillows in various shades of blues on a neutral sofa.

Add a navy rug to help ground a living space.

Add blues by way of furniture and decor - be bold!

recap: candles & cocktails

A few weeks ago, we debuted our first ever candle class. There were snacks, drinks, and of course, candles. Our candle genius and teacher was one of our good friends Courtney. She owns Purveyors of Fragrance and does just about everything under the sun. The class was so much fun meeting new people and reconnecting with old friends.

IMG_0612.jpeg

As everyone arrived, everyone was able to select which container they wanted for their candle. The most fun part about these is that once they are used up as a candle, they can be reused as planters! While some sipped on sangria and wine, snacked on the cheeseboard, and shopped the showroom, the first group got started pouring their very own candles.

Courtney brought a variety of scents for everyone to choose from, and then we got to weigh out the wax, weigh out the oil, and then stir and pour into their containers. The results were fabulous and the office smelled of fall heaven for a few days after. As each group went the other was shopping around and chatting with their friends. Overall, we had a blast and can’t wait for the next!

how to: style a stool

Something that we carry in our showroom, and use frequently on projects, are different types of garden stools. These decorative stools are so versatile on projects for their endless color options, shapes, sizes, and price points. There isn’t a space that we install that doesn’t have at least one of these little tables. Below are our top 3 uses for garden stools.

Grouping a few together not only creates visual appeal but can also replace the need for a coffee table. These little garden stools grouped together can add dimension, color and texture. You can put two together of the same color and size for a uniform look, mix up the sizes and colors for a little whimsy and/or pick the same material but change up the height. Possibilities are endless!

Another great way to use them is for decoration. We have a variety of stools in our showroom that we constantly move around for a pop of color, a place where we may need to display items and a spot for plants to land. Adding a potted plant (that may go unnoticed on the floor) to a garden stool automatically draws attention and visual interest.

edited blog 2.JPG

And as they’re most known for, we use them as a side table in any seating arrangements. A spot to place your drink, book or even feet as you are lounging outside. They are a great way to add furniture without it being too large for the space you are working with!

The opportunities are endless when it comes to using these stools. If you’re looking for where to get some, look no further than our showroom! Need help figuring out what would look best in your outdoor living area? We offer multiple types of design services to fit you and your space. Heather has an eye like no other and would love to help you with your design.

fall porch inspiration

There are so many different ways that porches can be styled for the season. We decided that we wanted to share some of the porches we pull inspiration from when decorating our own! The best part about decorating your home is that whatever color, style, or set up you choose is a reflection of your personal style. We love to see everyone’s personalities and tastes are displayed through the season. If you don’t love the warmer colors that fall tends to bring, then go for the lighter colors that you enjoy like the white pumpkins with pink mums rather than orange with a yellow mum. Mix and match, it’s all up to you. Here are some of our favorites!

In case you missed our fall favorites filled with our tips for decorating your front porch, we break down the different elements that takes the chore out of decorating, and leave you with the fun! Click here to check that one out, and don’t forget to tag us on Instagram when you style your own porch. Happy decorating!

fall favorites: front porches

Happy first day of fall! There’s nothing quite like the changing seasons, changing colors of the trees, the sweet smells of fall treats, and of course the relief of cooler weather. With fall comes changing out your vibrant colored summer decor for a more muted palette of warm browns, golden yellows, and deep oranges. These signs of fall, while exciting and heart racing, can also be stressful when it comes to decorating your front porch for the season. In this blog we’re going to be listing out what we think are front porch must haves for these cooler weather months, and also including a before and after to show you just how simple some of these swaps can be to give your front porch the perfect fall look.

fall front door favorites.jpg

First of all, nothing says fall quite like a beautiful wreath. Warm colors mixed with beautiful greenery and touches of a neutral like the tan that comes with hay or wheat. Adding this to your front door gives the perfect mix of color and beauty while also adding that finished look to your front porch.

This wreath is a beautiful mix of elements from nature like wheat, leaves, seeds, and feathers. You can find this one here, or another one we love here.

Secondly, you’ll have to have a good place to wipe your feet. During the fall, things get crunchy under your feet and no one wants to track that into their homes. A happy welcome doormat is the easiest solution that also brightens everyone’s day. The natural color of these doormats brings in a neutral to balance out and bring harmony to the other colors that you might have going on, and matches every house! we have to have some layered rugs. Just like how we like to layer up in the fall, so does your front porch! Adding some layering provides visual movement and an easy way to bring in those fall colors that won’t need watering.

These doormats and rugs are our absolute favorite! The welcome mats are a perfect size for any door, and the rugs make the space feel complete. You can find these doormats here, and great layering rugs like this one here!

Third, you guessed that these would be in here somewhere… pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins, and more pumpkins! You can never have enough pumpkins on your front porch. The more the merrier! Also the more you have, the more your porch will feel complete and visually interesting. Varying the size and color of pumpkins also adds to the polished and completed look of a front porch, and reminds everyone walking by the best part of fall.

We find that some of the best pumpkins with the most variety can be found at your local nursery, ours is Calloway’s, Trader Joe’s, and Market Street!

Fourth thing, a beautiful planter in our eyes is like having the perfect couch for your pillows, or furniture for your other decorations. You can’t have a great front porch for things like flowers and other plants without the perfect planter. You can find some of our favorite planters here, and here!

Fifth, of course you need plants! Some of our favorite fall plants are mums, of course, and we always love a good boxwood. Nothing too crazy or high maintenance. Just bringing in some life to a front porch adds tremendous amounts of interest and a polished look. Our recommendation for finding the perfect plants to polish off your front porch is to go to your local nursery!

We hope that you have fun refreshing your front porch for fall! We would love to see your transformations, so be sure to tag us on Instagram so we can see your handy work! Here is a little before and after of a front porch we refreshed for the season.

introducing e-design services

We are so excited to announce our newest service: e-design. This service is perfect for those who are not local to the DFW area, but still would still like the opportunity to work with us. E-design is perfect for those who are looking for a professionally designed space regardless of budget or location.

smith house.jpg

Through e-design, we will work with you virtually to provide the best plan for your space. Heather works one-on-one with our clients to create a visual “shopping list'“ in which you can go out and purchase on your own. We start out with a phone call to hear about your space. From there we collect photos, measurements, and any other information from you to get started. Heather then creates vision boards

There are a few ways we can go about working with you through this service:

Inspiration

A one hour Facetime or Skype call consultation with Heather and you. This is similar to our in-home consultation service, except we’ll be virtual. During this time, you can ask Heather any and all questions, advice, how to arrange furniture, where to buy accessories, etc. This is best for those who have a general idea of what they’re doing with their space, but just need to bounce ideas off of another creative, get advice on colors, and/or find the last missing pieces to make your space complete.

IMG_9209.jpg

Blueprint

This is where Heather creates a vision board with different furniture ideas, color palette, accent pieces, etc. Think of this as a picture shopping list for you to take as you shop on your own.

IMG_7633.jpg

Master Plan

This service is the full shebang. It’s everything above, including furniture layout, pricing, and links to purchase items. All you have to do is shop, order, and wait for your goods to arrive.

We wanted to offer different levels of service that clients can choose from that works best for them. We are very excited to be starting this service, and look forward to working with you, wherever you might be!

fiddle leaf fig tree care

Right now, the fiddle leaf fig is a hot commodity. Everyone everywhere is getting one and using it to decorate, but not a lot of people know how to properly care for these trendy trees. We have two of these beauties in our showroom and studio. One is absolutely thriving and one may or may not be coming back from the dead. This just goes to show that there really is a right way and a wrong way to caring for these plants.

fig tree graphic.jpg

The fiddle leaf fig tree, also known as the ficus lyrata comes all the way from the jungles of West Africa. They start off small, just like every plant, but they can grow to become over 6 feet tall. When properly cared for, they can grow a couple of feet every year. One last fact about this beloved large leafed plant is that those lovely large leaves are toxic to animals. If you have a dog or cat that gets into everything, you may want to invest in a fake tree.

Now let’s dig into the proper ways to care for the fiddle leaf fig tree.

Let’s talk sun. Just like you and me we need vitamin D from the sun, and this plant loves to soak up the sun too. It’s best to have the tree near an east facing window to ensure that it gets plenty of that filtered sunlight. Every few months, we would recommend turning the tree so that all sides of the tree can get the sun. Another important note is the necessity of wiping down the leaves maybe once a week so that the leaves can absorb as much sun as possible. Their large leaves are a great place for dust to settle, so when you’re wiping down your table tops and other dusty places, get your tree in on the action too!

Besides the sunlight, the other most important factor when caring for your tree is water. There are ways to over water and underwater and we are here to tell you how to notice the symptoms of both, and also how to cure it!

Knowing when to water is always something that people struggle with, as well asknowing how much. You will want to wait until the top inch of soil is dry before you water. Also, fiddle leaf figs like to be thoroughly watered but they don’t like to sit in it, so it’s important to ensure that the water has filtered through the plant and is not sitting in it’s container.

A sign that you are over watering your tree is that the leaves will develop brown spots around the edge and all throughout. The soil will also be quite damp and maybe even have a bit of an unpleasant odor.

A sign that your tree is under watered is if the leaves get brown around the edges and throughout, and also may start to develop holes throughout them.

If these problems are left unchecked, your trees leaves may begin to be holey.

There are a few other things to take into consideration when caring for your tree. Be sure to replant the tree into a larger planter once it begins to grow more than a few feet. Cramming the tree into a little pot will not lead it to thrive. Also, if bugs begin to collect on the underside of the leaves, grab a warm wet cloth with a little soapy water and wipe down all of the leaves. If that doesn’t do the trick, head to your local garden specialist for advice.

We hope you love your fiddle leaf figs as much as we do!

celebrate labor day the right way

For some, Labor Day means the last day to wear white, and for others it means a day off from work. Around here it means a day that we can relax by the pool or lake with our family and friends, and of course with a cocktail in hand. We’ve got the perfect recipe for you to ring out white for the season.

IMG_8323.jpg

This light and refreshing drink will pair perfectly with whatever you’re doing this Labor Day weekend. It’s also a great way to use some of your fresh mint from your garden! This blueberry mojito blends together the bright, sweet flavor of blueberries with the refreshing accents of mint straight from your garden (or the grocery store, we understand). The best part about this drink is that it’s super simple to throw together.

IMG_8541.jpg

First you need to gather all of your ingredients. Grab some blueberries, mint leaves, some sugar in the raw, a little fresh lime juice, light rum, crushed ice, and some chilled Prosecco or champagne. Put all ingredients into whatever pretty glass (preferably 12 oz) that you would like to use. We like our swig tumblers for outdoor use - keeps our drinks cold and if they tip over, no glass breakage Then, (if you’re a professional drink maker) grab your muddling tool (or if you’re not a pro) you can grab a spoon, and muddle the ingredients until the blueberries have released their juices.

Next, fill the glass with crushed ice and graciously pour the rum over, stir it up, and top with the sparkling drink of your choice and garnish with extra mint and blueberries. (and then snap a cute picture to tease all your friends!)

IMG_8544.jpg

That’s it! Now you have a beautiful and delicious drink to celebrate Labor Day. Of course we would recommend getting into your outdoor space and soaking up that vitamin d. As we like to say “life outdoors is life fully lived.”

IMG_8547.jpg
